So who's getting Botox these days?

You've heard about BOTOX, but you're asking yourself who gets this done? The answer is simple. It's probably being done by neighbors, co-workers, and, yes, even family members.

You're probably thinking to yourself, "no way'! But according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 6.7 million procedures were done in 2015 alone, making it the number one minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, with fillers coming in close behind.

Botox® is a botulinum toxin is a purified substance that's derived from bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin block the nerve signals to the muscle in which it was injected. Without a signal, the muscle is not able to contract. The end result is diminished unwanted facial wrinkles or appearance. Other botulinum toxin brands include Dysport® and Xeomin®, all of which are used regularly used with similar results.

Botulinum toxin can be used to

  • Smooth crow's feet, forehead furrows, frown lines, lip lines, and bunny lines

  • Diminish neck bands

  • Improve the appearance of skin dimpling of the chin

  • Lift the corners of the mouth

  • Soften a square jawline

  • Correct a gummy smile

What age should I start?

This answer many times is going to reflect personal views. More and more people in their mid to late 20's start to get the procedure done to prevent those pesky fine lines and wrinkles before they even show up. But don't worry if you haven't jumped on board; most individuals start in their mid 30's. Most permanent wrinkles don't typically settle in until closer to 40, but you can start doing it at any age, even if those wrinkles are already showing up.

What is the cost?

The average cost of botulinum toxin injections (e.g., Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®) is $385, according to 2017 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is based on different factors such as how advanced the fine lines and wrinkles are, how aggressively you want to treat the areas of concern, and therefore the amount of product used.
